CEU Courses for SLPs

SLPs in residential care settings need an evidence-based tool to use for dysphagia screening. This course teaches clinicians differences between screenings and assessments, how to effectively use the Yale Swallow Protocol as a predictive tool, and its relationship to Minimum Data Set (MDS) Assessment.

Effective communication comes in many forms. How to develop a personalized multimodal plan of care that includes effective communication for individuals with aphasia is described in this course. Evidence-based strategies, along with focused activities and stimuli, that lead to meaningful interactions, communication confidence, and improved quality of life are discussed.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series. It’s estimated that 25-30% of children with autism will never develop fluent speech. This course describes speech development, neurological issue that can interfere with it, and research-based strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve speech outcomes for clients on the autism spectrum.

Conflict is common in many workplace or educational settings. Failure to address conflict when it occurs can lead to dissatisfaction from all stakeholders. Sources of conflict and practical approaches to addressing conflict strategically are described in this course.

Key issues and topics related to the shortage of SLPs in the school setting are discussed in the course. Personal experiences and their impact are described and an action plan to deal with shortages is provided.

This is Part 1 of a four-part series. Pivotal foundations that should be addressed early in autism are described in this course. Specifically, building rapport based on the child’s unique interests, developing open channels of communication with parents, writing goals, and implementing Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) to empower children are discussed.

The experiences of people who have lived through stroke and aphasia can shed a uniquely powerful light on our clinical practices. In this course, people with aphasia discuss what SLPs can do during acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and at discharge that can best help them. Evidence that supports their suggestions is provided.

An introduction to Teepa Snow's Positive Approach to Care (PAC) is provided in this course. Knowledge and skills that can be integrated into daily interactions to promote quality of care and improved outcome for persons living with dementia are discussed. A disease progression classification model that focuses on skills and abilities a person still has is also described.

Thinking "outside of the box" fosters creative learning opportunities for students in various classroom settings. This course describes how to develop and implement a framework for improving social skills, life skills, vocational skills, and literacy skills that is creative and impactful.

Most SLPs have had little or no education or training in counseling skills and rely mostly on their intuition and suggestions from colleagues. The importance of learning counseling skills, counseling approaches and techniques (including "microskills" used in client interactions), and how to use them with various patient/family member populations and work settings are discussed in this course.
