By age 5, most children worldwide have acquired most consonants, vowels (and tones), and are intelligible. Respectful assessments that analyze children’s speech in all their home languages, and consider standard and dialect forms relevant to the child’s family, are described in this course. Free, evidence-based resources to support SLPs working with monolingual and multilingual children are also shared.

Rehabilitation for the total laryngectomy patient following post-surgical hospital discharge, with the goal of independent airway management, is described in this course. Best practices and challenges for pulmonary and communication training in home care and subacute settings are addressed, including electrolarynx use, voice prosthesis care, and tips for obtaining necessary supplies. A case study is included.

Various intraluminal and peristomal attachment options for Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) systems and/or hands-free devices are described in this course. Selection of the appropriate attachment and techniques for optimal placement/application of the attachment to achieve a good seal are addressed. Troubleshooting strategies for difficult stomal topography are also discussed.

Montessori is based on the principles of free choice and purposeful activity and focuses on the well-being of the whole person, including physical, spiritual, social, mental, and emotional needs. This course describes how SLPs can utilize functional goals and language-based activities to incorporate key components of the Montessori philosophy into therapy with older adults.

This course discusses differential diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and dysarthria in children, including similarities and differences in subsystem impairments and speech features between the two disorders. A freely available diagnostic tool, the Profile for Childhood Apraxia of speech and Dysarthria (ProCAD), is described, and video examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate its use and provide practice opportunities.

Users of augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) are highly vulnerable in emergency situations and may lose access to their AAC supports and devices during the process of rescue, relief, and recovery from disasters such as floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and hurricanes. This course discusses key roles for SLPs and provides information about free and low-cost resources that clinicians can use to support their clients with AAC needs as they prepare for and recover from disasters.

This course explores teletherapy for adults with developmental disabilities (DD) who are users of augmentative/alternative communication (AAC). Topics discussed include funding, quick essentials of teletherapy, and language modeling, as well as age-appropriate non-digital materials and free/paid digital materials that work well for adults with DD.

This course will provide a literature review addressing the feasibility and utilization of hands-free speech devices, along with a discussion of patient goals and quality-of-life concerns after laryngectomy. Device mechanics and design, patient candidacy, fitting procedures, and problem-solving strategies to support successful hands-free speech will also be covered. This course is presented jointly with Atos Medical.

Speech-language pathologists are receiving more referrals of students with communication disorders with accompanying Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and fine motor delays. The nature of these delays, their impact on communication and behavior, and signs to watch for are discussed in this course. Free and fun activities that can be integrated into therapy to boost these skills simultaneously with communication are described.
