Obstacles to the Supervisor-Supervisee Relationship

Angela Sherman Slp.D, CCC-SLP

December 21, 2009

Question

What are three obstacles to the supervisory-supervisee relationship?

Answer

The following may be some obstacles that might impact the supervisor-supervisee relationship. Typically, conflict occurs if goals and direction are unclear. Both parties should self-reflect and identify what the goal is. If there is low-involvement, ask the supervisee questions about performance in an ongoing dialogue and try to determine why this is an obstacle. Again, review performance and if needed, help the supervisee seek training that might be needed to assist them in the process.

This Ask the Expert was taken from the course entitled: The "Professional Continuum" of Supervision: From Graduate Student to Clinical Fellow" presented by Kerri Phillips SLP.D., CCC-SLP & Angela F. Sherman, SLP.D., CCC-SLP.
