I think there should have been discussion regarding SLPs having extensive training regarding speech and language development, disorders and remediation that other professions don’t. I once gave a presentation on articulation development to students of a university ABA program and discovered they were promoting NSOMs as the only way to remediate speech sound disorders, so when we are collaborating we also need to speak up when techniques are being used that are not research based or outdated.

This wasmy first course in understanding what ABA professionals do when working with children with disabilities. I have heard of controversy among their profession and SLPs, but I wasn't sure what it was about. Now, I know the difference between their skills and our profession. I do understand how parents seek ABA services and now I know the importance of collaboration with these professionals. I see how we are different and how we can work together for the best outcomes for our clients.

This was applicable to my current role and experiences as an SLP sharing clients with BCBAs. I love that the instructor highlighted the unique skill set of BCBAs and praises them for their background knowledge and also recognized that SLPs are highly trained and knowledgeable as well. I felt more at ease knowing that I have the power to foster ongoing conversations with BCBAs about our different areas of expertise and model how to work collaboratively to maximize growth for our clients.
