Happy Spring! Technically, March marks the beginning of spring. But for many of us, that is not always the case. Fortunately, we have some hot topics in store this month to warm you up on those cold days that continue to linger throughout March. And for those of you in warmer climates, feel free to take the laptop outside and enjoy these exciting courses.

Working Effectively with Anxious Children

This week, clinical psychologist and expert in mood and anxiety disorders, Aimee Kotrba returns to SpeechPathology.com to address anxiety in children and how it can negatively impact a child’s emotional well-being, their ability to succeed socially and educationally in school as well as their ability to thrive in speech/language interventions. Don’t miss out on this fantastic webinar happening tomorrow (Thursday, March 5 at 12:00 ET)!

Counseling for Children with Hearing Loss

The highly accomplished, pediatric audiologist, Dr. Jane Madell, joins us this week (Thursday, March 5 at 3:00 ET) to share her expertise in counseling and supporting children with hearing loss. Learn the types of support children with hearing loss need when being educating in mainstream settings and how to develop support groups for these children.  

Topics in AAC

Kristin Whitfield, an SLP specializing in AAC for adults and children, presents on Thursday, March 12th from 12:00-1:00 ET on visual supports for patients with dementia. Kristin will review the research and provide practical examples for introducing a variety of visual supports that can benefit specific patients on your caseload.

Michelle Lange, an occupational therapist and former Clinical Director of an assistive technology clinic, has worked closely with SLPs throughout her career. Speech language pathologists need to be familiar with mounting SGDs to help support the best communication outcomes for a client. In her upcoming webinar (Wednesday, March 18th; 3:00-4:00 ET), Michelle will discuss the whys and how-to’s of mounting SGDs necessary for successful communication.

School Service Delivery

School-based SLPs – be sure to check out these upcoming webinars that are sure to meet the needs of students on your caseload. Erin Savidge will discuss management and prevention of challenging behaviors when working with children in her course, Behavioral Management for SLPs (Thursday, March 19th; 12:00-1:00 ET). Shannon Smith’s webinar on Monday, March 23rd (3:00-4:00 ET) will address providing services to low functioning and non-verbal secondary students with a specific focus on the goals and appropriate implementation of secondary special education services for students with disabilities.  

CBT for SLPs

And finally, on Thursday, March 26th (12:00-2:00 ET) William Evans, MS, CCC-SLP will share his expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with TBI. Be sure to check out this two hour course on the basic principles, tools and approaches of CBT that can be utilized in your own clinical practice.

Amy has more than 14 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist. Prior to joining SpeechPathology.com in 2009, she previously worked at Case Western Reserve University assisting on several research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health focusing on childhood apraxia of speech and the impact of SSD on reading and writing development in school-age children. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Saint Mary’s College and an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from Northern Illinois University.
