I enjoyed the practicality of this course. I work with domestic violence victims who present with astounding rates of PTSD. The research with the DV population is very limited, and I was nice to learn about the source of some of their speech disturbances as demonstrated in veteran research.

The topic of PTSD was a new subject for me. Even though this course mainly dealt with the adult population, we are now seeing more and more children in the school setting that have been through trauma. It was a good course to begin the topic of trauma and how it is associated with speech and language disorders such as speech fluency, slower rate and comprehension to name a few. This course has brought to light the aftermath of dealing with trauma in the area of Speech and Language Therapy.

Fascinating. It is so complex no wonder it is challenging for vets to find the help they need. For personal reasons I really found it interesting that they are now talking about service personnel who may enter the military with underlying issues making them more likely to suffer from PTSD

I currently work with children, but some have suffered trauma and may have PTSD. I have worked with Veterans in the past. I like the idea of working with disciplines like music therapists that we don’t usually get to work with.

Dr. Carozza’s presentation was very clear and concise in PTSD description and impacts of trauma upon military vets. Although I am retired, learning more about PTSD and trauma is important to me especially with children and adults. I am curious about acquired PTSD in infants due to situations of abandonment and other traumas before language development and during the early years as language is developing.

Speaker made a good effort to convey information about the topic. I noted a great deal of reading of the slides and only looking at them vs. relaying the information in a lecture style. Wondering how familiar the speaker is with the topic as she kept saying "it says" vs speaker says that... Wondering if the speaker was not feeling well today. I did learn some things about the topic.

The speaker spoke in very clear and concrete terms. Her slides contained an appropriate amount of information and then she expanded on them in ways that were appropriately long (not too long, not too short). She also did a great job explaining the evidence-based underpinnings that justify creative therapies.

This course gave a general knowledge of PTSD. However, it did not fully cover how PTSD affects communication other than generalities. It did not cover how SLPs are to treat the language/communication component. It’s focus was more how a neuropsychologist should approach the patient.

Information was timely and helped to clarify ways to approach diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. Often, I am told by other SLPs in my area, that unless PTSD had a comorbidity of stroke or TBI, SLPs should not be working with these individuals. The areas of attention, various memory strategies, as well as language is important from a cognitive communication perspective.

I wish that it would have also dove into how PTSD impacts speech and language with children as I often work with clients who have experienced trauma and are suffering from complex PTSD. This is focused on veterans which I'm sure is very helpful for people who serve that population. So if that's your population, give it a listen!

I could have used this course three years ago when I was working with multiple individuals in the active duty and veteran populations dealing with PTSD and TBI as well as mTBI. This information holds value and helps those participating gain a greater understanding of working with various individuals with PTSD in our scope of practice.
