Cultural humility, the ways it is different from cultural competence, and methods for incorporating it into everyday clinical practice are discussed in this course. Topics include the importance of clinician self-reflection for examining attitudes on cultural humility and fostering acceptance & inclusion, and the potential benefits to clients by creating more authentic, meaningful therapeutic relationships.

Adeola (Toni) is a community-based mental health occupational therapist working in Chicago, IL. Additionally, Toni is the co-founder and Chair of Diverse-OT National, a national organization dedicated to advancing the cultural climate within the occupational therapy profession and strives to foster a strong community of critically reflexive occupational therapists and students. Toni received their Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and is currently completing their occupational therapy doctorate at Columbia University. The focus of their doctoral work is creating an assessment tool that aims to center the lived experiences of community-dwelling adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Toni is passionate about delivering high-quality and client-centered services, health equity, and justice, and enjoys assisting clients to achieve their personal goals.
Caitlin Rhoten is a school-based occupational therapist working within the Madison Metropolitan School District. Driven by justice and inclusion, Caitlin is dedicated to providing equitable services to meet the diverse needs of her students. In addition to her role as an occupational therapist, Caitlin is the co-founder and vice-chair of Diverse-OT. Diverse-OT is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to advance the OT profession's cultural climate by increasing student knowledge of culturally responsive practice and works to support underrepresented students of color. Caitlin’s professional interests include occupational justice, health equity, and culturally relevant care. Caitlin earned an OTD from Thomas Jefferson University and her Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
