I was an ASL interpreter prior to becoming an SLP, so I really appreciated this webinar. Thank you very much. I like to keep current with anything and everything. And, I too, have been asked to perform the job of ASL and interpreter in the same meeting. SO inappropriate and unethical. Of course, I did not do it, but my actions were frowned upon by my superiors. My license and morals are much more important to me.

Stating what our role is as SLP’s and how the students and their families need to be given the proper treatment but also how the students need to be viewed given their circumstances. Just because a student doesn’t speak English and is a Newcomer to the US, it doesn’t mean they need special education. I get referrals all the time from teachers in my school of students in TK, Kinder, have a question, we have families that have dialects and speak very little Spanish.

This is a presenter who has given not only excellent answers to ethical standards involved in interpreting, but helped novices navigate and think through what ethical problems typically occur in schools. I helped train the first set of interpreters utilized in therapy, evaluations, and IEP meetings, back in the 1980s & employed by our school district. Helpful technology has evolved, but the basic "need to knows" are the same. We used the books authored by Larry Mattes out of California as ref.
