Connecting with patients in an acute care setting can be very difficult due to the stress the patient and their family is experiencing. This course reinforced an approach that I use where I simply try to listen and support and honor their spiritual values and needs, even if they don't perfectly align with mine.

I think too frequently people are afraid to discuss this aspect of treatment: it's seen as possibly forcing our beliefs on someone else. This framework is sensitive to that concern.

Scott exceeded my expectation with his presentation on culture and spirituality. One of the profound statements he made was that these two aspects of life impact healing. the better we know as much as we can about our patient it may have a positive impact on participation. You presented sometimes considered a sensitive subject matter most functional with excellent takeaways.Thank you for your contribution to our field with your thoughts and expertise!

It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. There was more of an emphasis on organized religion than on either cultural humility or spirituality. I felt like it was leaving out a swath of patients who might differ from the presenter's background/viewpoint, even though he obviously was making attempts to be sensitive, open, and accommodating.

A client's spirituality and our knowledge of what that means for their course of treatment may be important... BUT these are beliefs and two inconsistent beliefs (such as the therapist believing they have the "one true God" and the client having no god, a different god or a separate belief system) introduces the potential for ritual abuse and religious bias. Having grown up in an Evangelical Christian background with a pastor father, I know that conversion of others is a central tenet.

Dr. Wengerd was VERY easy to listen to and I really enjoyed his "down to earth" way of speaking. He gave some good examples and I loved that he involved his audience so much. I think often during assessments that we just aren't given enough time to "know" the patients well enough to delve into some of these areas. They come up more often during therapy.

This course brought to light positive ways to deal with spirituality without involving organized religion. It reminded us as therapists that we need to provide an open relationship and connection with the patient. Our goal is their healing. We are to be non judgmental. The more I learn and understand about my patient's culture and spirituality the better I can serve them. It helped me to think of their perspective, not mine. We need to create an environment that allows for connections.

I agree with the speaker that being aware of cultural issues are important when providing clinical services and that we should approach our clients' beliefs non-judgmentally. I was hoping, however, for more citing of research regarding cultural issues in care, and more information about a variety of cultures. Much of this course was based on the speaker's personal musings and reflected a white, middle American, Christian experience and perspective.

It was interesting with all the examples and stories, etc. he shared. We do need to include this area of spirituality if we are addressing the "whole" person with our therapy. The speaker was bold to be addressing this as part of culture, but it is really a normal part and the most important part of ourselves as human beings.
