Dr. McKibbin's presentation of the issues in this area is clear and accurate and she makes a strong case for the pre-assessment format as the best way to provide EL students with what they need. The "Universal Indicators Of Language Impairment" chart provided is well-sourced and especially helpful. Thank you for this presentation.

The emphasis on the pre-assessment protocol was very useful, because I had been interested in the assessment process, but it was instructive to learn about the pre-assessment process because that is really half the battle when it comes to assessing whether there is a LI. The attention given to interviewing and talking with the caregivers was also insightful. This will all be very useful as I anticipate having to complete more such assessments this year.

This information is timely and needed, especially by those of us who graduated many years ago. English language learners and Language Impairment research was not addressed as thoroughly at that time. The pre-assessment process and rationale are presented well. I am thankful for this information.

I especially value the instruction to interview others (teachers, interpreters, family) as a vital part of the pre-assessment process for EL learners. It is, also, nice to hear a fellow SLP encourage school districts to NOT over-identify students with LI; many public school-based SLP's are already struggling b/c of high caseloads. Excellent course! Highly recommended!!

My responses to the exam questions are skewed lower than they might be, as in years past I became quite familiar with processes that lead to valid determination of language impairment in ELLs. So, I was already fairly confident and did not learn much additional info. I took this course primarily to see if new information was available, or processes had changed. Overall, I thought it was informative, and a good overview however.

These are some questions that I come across regularly in the preschool and preK settings. I rely heavily on the program specialists in the schools as well as the faculty and staff who are dual language speakers. They will often assist me with asking questions and letting me know if the child is responding with correct sounds and/or answers to questions in their primary language. Then if we need to provide RTI, we can do it more specifically designed to the deficit.
