Question
How do HIPAA Privacy Rules apply to school-based SLPs?
Answer
The same Privacy Rules apply to all SLP services provided whether in a school, clinic, hospital or other setting. We, as professionals must always remember that, regardless of our practice setting, we must not only provide the highest quality of care but also protect the ones to whom we provide our services, including their health information. When it comes to the school setting, there are many conversations, emails and records that leave medical, social, and personal information at risk for being compromised. This information is no less important or private than if services were provided in the hospital or clinic. Following HIPAA policies and procedures helps to ensure that the child's health information remains secure.
