The instructor was excellent and presented the information in a way that was very easy to understand. I feel like there were very clear ways to implement what I learned. It helped confirm some of the things I am already aware of and doing. This presenter did a great job using personal stories and information to help us take the perspective of an interpreter or a person using interpreter services.

Having been in situations where interpreters were needed, the information provided in the course helped outline the qualifications for valid interpreters. The information and websites to check the validity of the interpreter and their cultural proficiency was very valuable. Also, the definitions and interpreting methods for consecutive and simultaneous interpreting was interesting. Often it is difficult to have avenues for locating interpreters in rural environments.

This presentation provided very helpful information and more ideas to try when working with interpreters such as requesting additional time to meet with the interpreter before and after the meeting to make sure you have enough time to go over the material that will be interpreted into another language, including specific vocabulary that they may need to look up ahead of time.

All this information is so relevant! As a bilingual-SLP, I've worked with many interpreters, and I cannot agree more that interpreters vary in skill and knowledge of school-based issues and vocabulary for IEP meetings. It would be great if districts would train a pool of interpreters to the specifics of school IEP meetings.
