Behavior in the schools seems to be worsening. Kids often appear "in control" of the teacher, working when they want to work and ignoring tasks unless they want to complete them. I really like the "encouragement" vs. "praise" strategies, as well as figuring out if the student feels like they belong and feel significant. I also like the "I notice" phrasing.

This course really reflects a good balance between authoritarian versus submissive cultures of interaction with children. I think that younger, newer teachers would really benefit from direct instruction in this area as many gen z teachers themselves now may be coming from permissive, submissive etc. etc. upbringings.

Behavior seems to be a significant factor in school currently and there are huge resources being directed to understanding and intervening in the areas of anxiety and mental health. Our cultures are immersed in an ongoing onslaught of sex, murders, war and trauma... emotional sensationalism is ruling.... Children are vulnerable to being in environments where no one "has the time"... is seems Positive Discipline is a timely enterprise that will benefit us all....!

It was interesting to think about all behaviors having a purpose behind it. I know I'll be thinking about this in my practice when I see behaviors occur. It will be helpful to understand the intent behind the behavior to kindly correct and move forward from the behavior. I liked the example of the teacher giving the little girl choices of how it would help her to stay quiet. Then giving more choices of what to draw and the color and so on.
