Great course! Too much emphasis was placed on standardized testing during my 36 years working in the schools. I had the same students for years and was required to reassess them every three years using the same standardized test only to show the parents that they were still significantly impaired. That’s why I always emphasized the language sample, work samples, teacher feedback, social skills screenings, anecdotal evidence to support the child’s true level of functioning and progress.

I enjoyed her passion and how much experience she has in the schools. I want to also take a multifaceted approach to language in order to assess children better rather than solely relying on MLU as it does not take into consideration cultural and linguistic diversity.

Angie is just the best presenter. She has an engaging style that makes a 1.5 hour presentation go by quickly. The content is well organized with resources provided. She circles back to information previously presented which helps reinforce it and incorporate it into the current topic. She also effortlessly previews ahead, while on a topic, saying "This is also related to ....which we will get to in a moment." I learned so much from this course which can definitely improve my practice!

Good second part of a two part course on how standardized assessments have many limitations and should not be the only tool when determining if a child has a speech and language impairment and is eligible for special education. Other tool to use are dynamic assessment through test, teach, retest; comparison of work samples to low, middle, and high achieving peers; gathering a language sample; gathering a narrative comprehension and production sample to name a few.

We have been inundated with standardized tests are the only way ... Ive always wondered how the tests can all be so radically different but all test language... Ive typically only used intelligibility ratings and phonetic inventory percentages on severe students to show progress because standardized scores won't move. This will change the way I test.

The presenter was very organized and her powerpoints were very easy to follow. I was really interested in the information she was sharing. The only reason I did not rate the course excellent, is because the presenter speaks extremely fast. I realize she was covering a lot of information, and the powerpoints filled in most of what she was said when I may have missed something, but the speed of her speech did get in the way for me a little bit.

Very important information. I feel like it's so much with regard to the laws that I need to review the notes many times before I can grasp it more completely. My population is 2-9 to 4 years old. Initial preschool evaluations have specific needs that I wish could be covered more in depth; many alternative tools don't apply (i.e. work samples, narrative language). Discussing educational impact is a specific challenge for initial preschool evaluations.

The presenter clearly explains what an SLP needs to understand in their role as the speech pathologist as part of the special education team. It explains how to choose assessments that are standardized as well as the many other ways to assess a student's language, speech and pragmatic skills and how to determent special education eligibility. The presenter gives many helpful handouts and free resources. This was an overall excellent presentation.
