It was great to hear this perspective. I would love to have a conversation with this presenter to ask questions related to helping an older child (8-10 yrs) get started and engaged in his own life when there is no participation at this point for even potty training or self-care. I will be implementing this information/perspective with clients who are engaged, can communicate and do have perspective; for sure to delete the eye contact goals. Thank you! I hope you have more of this type of course

I appreciated that she provided concrete research and examples of alternative goals/areas of focus beyond social skills training. I would've loved to talk more in depth about how to introduce and implement these kinds of practices as a clinician in the public school setting, which is still largely compliance based (perhaps shifting the focus from social skills training to executive functioning supports when appropriate?).

The first half of this course I was very resistant to the ideas the presenter was suggesting as it went completely against everything I'd been taught in grad school and my early years working with children with autism about social skills training. But by the end, I was inspired. I feel like my eyes have been opened to a completely different way of thinking about autism and this new way of approaching these children and helping them feel empowered rather than hiding who they are. I want more!

Even though I work in a SNF, I also attend and teach children where I worship. We are experiencing growth of atypical individuals and families. I consider myself neurodivergent and my daughter age 35 years, more than I. This is great information to help educate typical who are having difficulty with what they consider poor grooming and differences in communication styles. Thank you!

I work with younger students, which a lot of this information was geared more for older individuals. However, this does get me to think more about the big picture for these students and their social communication skills and goals. I loved that they included the goal makeover section. This helps reroute thinking to comply with current research findings. One takeaway for me is to veer away from using eye contact as an objective. Overall, great information!

I work with/have worked with a lot of autistic people ranging from ages 4-22. I really liked hearing more research. Based of experiences I have had, I related to what the therapist was taking about. I have received goals for autistic students like some of the “negative” examples and really appreciated her stating what other goals you could do, or don't do a goal at all depending on the perceived “problem”.

Thank you for providing examples of IEP goals and describing how to write up a social language evaluation in a MET! I have read research studies and participated in several PDs about neurodiversity affirming practices but none of them have given examples of how to apply these principles to school based practice which often requires the use of a medical model framework to evaluate and qualify students for services and to have measurable IEP goals.

I love that she backed up her own experiences with research so that I can 'defend' this approach to teaching. Much of this research is new thinking for me, aside from that about eye contact. Positive takeaways for me were understanding masking and the cost of that for the autistic person, some IEP/POC goal changes, IEP/POC desired outcomes, and guidance around friendship for an autistic person. Less positive takeaways for me are how we as SLPs work with our students and prepare them for a school world and even home life that has not caught up with this research.

As a school based SLP I have not been exposed to this information and it is totally mind blowing for me. It is going to influence how I work with my autistic students moving forward. I feel good in that for a lot of my students I have already written self-advocacy goals. I do need to start adjusting my mindset though away from the expected social conventions of conversation and ways they can advocate for their own specific style of communication.
