Julie was authentic and her passion about this subject is obvious - it was a joy to watch someone celebrate autistic acceptance and to provide so much research to share with other clinicians to show why this is such an important change needed across our field. Julie's honesty, compassion, and willingness to share in her own experiences and to support autistic individuals and their whole selves made this presentation so worth it. She's incredible!

The speaker was knowledgeable on the topic, not just because she has a lived experience but also because she knows the evidence and clearly presented it. I have worked with Autistic people my entire 40 year career in many different contexts and ages. By far the most successful was when we had a group of autistic adolescents come together in a weekly group where they took an activity and planned it together. I cannot wait to implement Julie's ideas and research.

This information is so helpful to both those of use working with autistics and their families because we have been trying to therapy out of the autism out of students for years, and it has not worked. I think teaching acceptance and differences in autistics and switching to goal writing that promotes self-advocacy, body autonomy, and acceptance of social differences will make everyone happier. The issue is how to make all of this work in a typical school system.

Although I appreciate the information given in this course, the way it was presented was very negative. The words describing nerotypicals were harsh and untrue of many people. I am saddened that she has experienced unfair treatment, just because she is Autistic; however, not all neurotypicals are trying to "change" those who are different. Many SLPs are already using teaching strategies to support those with Autism and educate those without.

I thought this course was helpful, but it did a lot of shaming of previous practices/methods. I think as SLPs we need to understand that new research will always continuously be changing our therapy practices, instead of shaming those that may have yet to dive into new insights. Also, it would have been helpful to focus more on what to do (like strength based reports, goals, intervention techniques) rather than spend the majority of the time on what NOT to do.

I appreciate that the speaker was neurodivergent herself and could shed light from that perspective on the topic. It really opened my eyes to how we can better service these individuals. I came away with a better understanding of what double empathy is and loved the presenter's example of when she assessed a student of what that looked like. I found interesting the research findings that demonstrate AU's social behavior includes effective communication and interaction.

Even though I’ve read Julie’s website and already knew some information, this was an excellent presentation that will help me better explain these concepts to parents and teachers. Both my autistic and NT clients are encouraged to identify favorite things and topics in my speech room, which helps me create more child-centered sessions.
