I really loved listening to this course because it is affirming and positively supportive of individuals with autism as well as their communication partners. Over the years it has been wonderful to witness neurodiverse students of mine not having to "hide" their autism differences, rather we as a culture are shifting to more acceptance and appreciation of the neurodiversity around us!

I wish everyone who worked with autistic students was required to watch this. I have been advocating for these changes for so long, and have been met with so much push back from people who are just comfortable maintaining "the way they've always done things." Your presentation gave me more information and research to support as I continue on this advocacy journey. Thank you!

So valuable and important. It's sad that this stuff feels so revolutionary, but I am so glad that our field is moving in this direction to help autistic people accept who they really are and to help train neurotypicals to accept them too.

While I 100% agree that nonautistics need to be taught about communication differences, this course was very difficult to listen to. Stating that ABA is grooming children is a dangerous and harmful statement. ABA can absolutely teach children to self advocate, and this blanket statement about grooming is disgusting.

This presentation is extremist and misinterprets/overapplies the research based evidence. While autistic individuals should certainly be respected, learn to self-advocate, and not feel forced to blend in at all times; it is unrealistic to expect that others will make accommodations for them across all situations. Acceptance of neurodiversity does not preclude gently teaching children skills that will help them to interact successfully with the majority.

Though I have done many of the suggested ways of helping autistic students, I have also taught masking and skills to help them to be more accepted with neurotypical students. Instead, I will go forward with helping the neurotypical students to be more accepting while assisting the autistic students to self-advocate and understand that they need not be what others want them to be. I will also assist parents to accept their chil

It's good information, but as the parent of an autistic person, I also think it's important to teach social communication skills to students with autism, because there's never going to be a point at which 100% of peers understand or relate to them. Yes we need to help others learn more about autism and accepting / interacting with those with autism, but there is a balance where you also need to prepare students with autism so they can survive in a situation where people aren't understanding.

I think this topic is so important and changing how we support our autistic clients. However, I do think some of the data provided was not transparently provided. For example, the study from 2020 by Crompton has many factors that could have lead to biases in the information provided (i.e. small sample size, avg. dx time was 30 years of age, people collected for autistic communities). I feel like the data taken form that study was stretched to support the argument of the speaker.

This was an exceptional course. Very informative, organized, and well-paced. I really appreciated that it didn't just say, "Social Kills training is bad"-- it explained in detail the rationale, gave insight into the Autistic mind, and provided real examples and suggestions about alternative ways to actually support these students and have conversations with parents/colleagues. Many resources were referenced as well. I'm seeing lots of parallels to the difference vs. disorder conversations.
