This was the best course I have taken on speech pathology.com. It challenged me. I'm now thinking differently as a result, which I love. It was also practical and offered clear, concrete replacements for practices that I now understand to be harmful.

Thank you for providing examples of IEP goals and describing how to write up a social language evaluation in a MET! I have read research studies and participated in several PDs about neurodiversity affirming practices but none of them have given examples of how to apply these principles to school based practice which often requires the use of a medical model framework to evaluate and qualify students for services and to have measurable IEP goals.

I now have a new perspective on social skill training for autistic students. I didn't realize how harmful making an autistic student make appropriate eye contact with peers, teachers, and other adults could be. Self-advocacy is a great skill to always include as a goal.

I love that she backed up her own experiences with research so that I can 'defend' this approach to teaching. It also made me realize that one of the goals that I constantly propose, may not be worded well. In the past few years, I have realized that focusing more on problem solving goals is more helpful to my studentsin the long run.

Much of this research is new thinking for me, aside from that about eye contact. Positive takeaways for me were understanding masking and the cost of that for the autistic person, some IEP/POC goal changes, IEP/POC desired outcomes, and guidance around friendship for an autistic person. Less positive takeaways for me are how we as SLPs work with our students and prepare them for a school world and even home life that has not caught up with this research.

As a school based SLP I have not been exposed to this information and it is totally mind blowing for me. It is going to influence how I work with my autistic students moving forward. I feel good in that for a lot of my students I have already written self-advocacy goals. I do need to start adjusting my mindset though away from the expected social conventions of conversation and ways they can advocate for their own specific style of communication.

I feel her perspective as an autistic adult and SLP is unique and profound. I am an SLP and my son is autistic and I felt this course empowered me as an advocate in IEP meetings and how to look at his writing for him and he grows. I also felt very inspired about the friendship portion and appreciated the suggestions of how to support meaningful friendship building without compromising my son’s personal communication and social styles.

Julie was authentic and her passion about this subject is obvious - it was a joy to watch someone celebrate autistic acceptance and to provide so much research to share with other clinicians to show why this is such an important change needed across our field. Julie's honesty, compassion, and willingness to share in her own experiences and to support autistic individuals and their whole selves made this presentation so worth it. She's incredible!

The speaker was knowledgeable on the topic, not just because she has a lived experience but also because she knows the evidence and clearly presented it. I have worked with Autistic people my entire 40 year career in many different contexts and ages. By far the most successful was when we had a group of autistic adolescents come together in a weekly group where they took an activity and planned it together. I cannot wait to implement Julie's ideas and research.

This information is so helpful to both those of use working with autistics and their families because we have been trying to therapy out of the autism out of students for years, and it has not worked. I think teaching acceptance and differences in autistics and switching to goal writing that promotes self-advocacy, body autonomy, and acceptance of social differences will make everyone happier. The issue is how to make all of this work in a typical school system.
