Teresa Farnham, MA,CCC-SLP, renewed my confidence in what I have been doing as far as assessments go, i.e., recording, MLU's and Oral Assessments. However, her information about contrasting Place, Manner and Voicing has giving me a new way about teaching. Also, I too believe that when writing up goals for articulation, that the goals should not be stifled to just one or two phonemes. I so enjoyed this session with Teresa and look forward to listening to more of her expertise.

This is a completely different approach to selecting targets that what I learned in school years ago, and she explained how to select the targets and why which will help tremendously with several children that I see that have severe phonological disorders.

It followed a specific outline that was easy to follow, it helped me understand how to really analyze the phoneme for the ones that were most unstimuable and figure out what phonemes should be worked on. It provided good handouts to be able to be used with your analysis process. It really helped me understand why we should also take a language sample as well. More discussion about the validity of language samples.

Using therapy to increase a student's intelligibility is always the goal when working with a student with SSD, but yet then we write goals for specific sounds in an effort to improve intelligibility. I'm encouraged by the idea of writing goals for intelligibility instead of specific sounds and look forward to the next part of the class series.
