It is important to take the child's lead; for example, if they line cars up in a row, a therapist should build on that situation since it is joyful and meaningful to the client. Also, if a child fidgets or can't sit still or has other issues, don't spend time on reducing these behaviors because then it will be too much for the neurodivergent child to actually focus on the session since they will also be focusing on reducing these behaviors. Focus on their strength, passion and happiness.

This course was well organized and so thought provoking. I have been an SLP for 20+ years and although we were trained in graduate school (late 90s) to be considerate and sensitive to differences among our clients, we were also taught how to "treat" autism and write goals to extinguish/reduce autistic behaviors during therapy. I wish I had taken this course sooner - loved it!

I have been working with more autistic clients recently and the information presented gave me confirmation that I am on the right track! I am a "seasoned" SLP and was taught that autistic traits should be extinguished. This NEVER felt right to me, and in my own private practice, I referred autistic clients to colleagues when they (their families) were looking for compliance based treatment.

Although the neurodiversity movement has valuable strengths—such as reducing stigma, promoting acceptance, and elevating autistic voices—I also see some concerning aspects. At times the movement feels ideologically rigid, limiting nuanced conversations about support needs and treatment. It can also seem to assume that all autistic people share the same perspective, even though some may not view autism as an identity or may see their symptoms as challenges rather than sources of pride.

It made me think about working with teenagers and adults with autism on how to use their language skills to solve problems they experience and to teach them to value themselves and try to self advocate for themselves. In this way we can work on those skills that individuals with autism need to improve their lives and not just on skills designed to mask behaviors that others feel necessary.
