Although the neurodiversity movement has valuable strengths—such as reducing stigma, promoting acceptance, and elevating autistic voices—I also see some concerning aspects. At times the movement feels ideologically rigid, limiting nuanced conversations about support needs and treatment. It can also seem to assume that all autistic people share the same perspective, even though some may not view autism as an identity or may see their symptoms as challenges rather than sources of pride.

This was a very good introduction, but I look forward to the next course she mentioned which may focus more on the positive practices of neurodiversity affirming practices rather than pointing out what it is not. The history and background offered, as well as linking it to conversion therapy was very powerful.

It made me think about working with teenagers and adults with autism on how to use their language skills to solve problems they experience and to teach them to value themselves and try to self advocate for themselves. In this way we can work on those skills that individuals with autism need to improve their lives and not just on skills designed to mask behaviors that others feel necessary.

The resources shared are very helpful. The discussion of the history of "intervention" with autistic children was heartbreaking, but also compelling. That, in addition to the research cited, will continue to be helpful to me as resources to share with others in pushing for more neurodiversity-affirming practices and attitudes among my colleagues at the school where I work.

I did not like that the author spoke negatively about other professionals. ALSO there are many people with autism who are nonverbal, self-harming, and need a LOT of support that would love to not have been born with autism. I think the author is neglecting to acknowledge that not everyone wants affirmation. Parents and families NEED HELP.
