I learned a lot from this. As I went through the webinar I found myself applying ableist practices at some point in my career, as well as thinking those were appropriate targets. I learned SO much about my practices, Autistic people's culture. I will certainly apply the principles I've learned in this course to my professional work.

This course was very informative about autism advocacy and neurodiversity. The presenter had a perspective that compelled me to learn more about how I can be an ally rather than being focused on changing behaviors in autistic children in therapy. This course should be required!! We as SLPs have been given a definition of communication that has not been entirely inclusive of this population, until recently, and we need to make it a priority to educate ourselves to do better.

The presenter's tone and position toward others who aren't pioneers in this movement is condescending and overgeneralizing everyone as being "against" them. I have a lot to learn and am taking steps to do so, but I think we can cover a lot more ground if we don't establish sides, but build bridges.

Very interesting discussion of the "Autistic Rights Movement". I always felt that the ABA approach was "off" and her comparison of this to "Conversion therapy", although not as extreme as in the 70's, was enlightening. Acceptance and respect are key.

As a SLP in a school district, I have found it really difficult to stay knowledgeable and current in the many areas I am expected to be an expert. I have been trying to teach my colleagues about the Neurodiversity Movement, but have met with a lot of road blocks and ableist thinking. I feel that this course gave me the right words to sayand confidence for these conversations as well as the evidence to back it up.

Julie Roberts' grasp of the problematic history of treating clients with autism, and her ability to tie it into persistent myths about autism that survive to this day, provided clear warning signals for how not to approach autistic clients. Her focus on neurodiversity-affirming treatment provides a "patient-first" way forward for SLPs, clients, and their families.

It further reinforced my beliefs about working with autistic individuals, however I still call them people with autism. I think of them as people first but I understand why they want to be called autistic. I enjoyed learning about the neurodivergency movement from a person who was diagnosed with autism as an adult. I believe in following their lead as a whole. However, some parents really want ABA. I don't think we should ever put individuals in a box. I am not a ABA proponent.

This is the first course I’ve ever seen to talk about the neurodiversity movement. I think it’s so important to be teaching this and that it should be common knowledge. So much of what is taught to speech therapists in school is ableist, even down to the evaluations that neurodivergent students are given. We need to close the gap between evidence and practice and listen to the voices of neurodivergent people, and this course emphasizes that.

Sharing the archaic way that Autism was once approached versus now and showing the longterm effects. Through real life examples and replicated studies demonstrated throughout the presentation; the audience was able to see the need for advocacy and changing of "societal norms" and biases. This was presented very well.
