Declaring that all ABA is conversion therapy. All SLPs use some ABA strategies when they incorporate positive reinforcement. Not all ABA is bad, and I have seen it give autistic children an understanding of cause and effect that then helps us make progress in therapy.

While I agree with the presenter's overarching argument, her presentation felt like a heavy-handed lecture. Interestingly, this presentation makes me feel that I need to self-declare that I am a liberal ally. That shouldn't be on my mind when doing CEUs. The important ideas that might bring about a shift in thinking are almost drowned out by the shaming language. Most of us are intelligent enough to challenge our own view without an educational tool that felt like a political speech.

I struggle to get my team, (in a public elementary school) to have an open mind regarding neurodiverse-affirming perspectives, goals, philosophy, in considering what the goals of special education services and related services need to consider. People are very focused on extinguishing behaviors that bother them and on making kids appear to be just like other kids on the surface. This is inspiring and provides me support in making continued efforts regarding neurodiverse-affirming practices.
