I liked her other neurodiversity presentation better. As an SLP AND assistant director for an autism program, I believe it is good for autistic students/people to know how neurotypical peers communicate. I believe exposing them to social skills can be helpful, although I do disagree with social skills "training".

The Course #10429: The Neurodiversity Movement: An Overview for Autism Service Providers was excellent because neurodiversity was defined and explained well. I was unfamiliar with albeism and neurodiversity lite and related terminology and it was defined extremely well. The course was presented in nice sequence and was well organized. I found the neurodiversity-affirming therapy was moving and comprehensive. The dehumanization myth Dr. Ole Ivar Lovaas - in Psychology Today, 1974: was shocking.

This was something I had never heard before and was quite eye opening. I already knew not to teach eye contact but I was unaware that there was more to it than that. The only reason I gave this course a 4 instead of a 5 is that I would have liked more information on what can be done instead of what not to do. There was some information on this but I would have liked to hear more.

It talks a lot about how to accept autistic behaviors, without actually giving resources to help manage those behaviors, which is greatly needed. Example: self injurious behaviors or violent bx. Everyone knows that many with ASD have them, and this presenter says to accept them. At what point does this movement go too far in acceptance to the detriment of the health and safety of autistic people and their families/therapists?

The content. I don't want to believe that our therapy initiatives to work with Autistic children and their families have been harmful in ANY way, but infact our ways have been harmful in almost everyway. Not my intention, I will definitely try my best to change my approach, but I feel this was just drawing my attention to the problem of our practices. I need more info to know what TO DO!

I perceived this presentation to have a very negative tone. I found it to be incredibly dismissive of any benefit of Applied Behavior Analysis. I am not a BCBA, but I have worked in a residential school with autistic children with severe self-injurious and aggressive behaviors. ABA (no punishment) and communication training worked to decrease these behaviors and allow them to visit with family or stay seriously injured from self-harm. I was very disappointed in her sweeping statements.

This was by far my favorite course. I love Julie Roberts and how she is an amazing advocate for the neurdiverse population. She is an amazing autistic person and peer. I am definitely biased since I have an adult autistic son who is also thriving. I used to want him to be neurotypical when I found out about his diagnosis (mask and all that); however when I found out his diagnosis; however, he is so talented and multifaceted and such a warm and caring person that I don't want I'm any otherway
