I am very disheartened that Dr. Whited would use the 3 cueing methods for reading instruction when it has been debunked and is all over the news in the education world. As an SLP who specializes in dyslexia and fought this for my own daughter to learn to read inside public school, I am saddened that this presentation included these strategies for reading. The pictures that you found on-line have been described as strategies that poor readers use so SLPs should know this.

I was extremely disappointed with the misinformation about learning to read. Specifically, telling children to guess at a word, look at pictures to figure it out, etc. is beyond disappointing as we have over 20 years of evidence-based research stating that is not how to teach reading. At a minimum you should look at the National Reading Panel.

I question how current the information in this course is. It seems to disregard the science of reading and relies on disproven strategies for teaching reading. I appreciate that good readers constantly integrate their background knowledge into reading and reading comprehension, but my understanding of the science of reading is that students should not be taught to guess what a word might be based on context or picture clues.
