This course introduces a framework of metalinguistic questions that educators can use to help students connect key elements of language—morphology, phonology, semantics, and orthography—with literacy skills such as vocabulary development, decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension. The strategies presented are adaptable to support learners across all grade levels and abilities.

Lisa Barnett specializes in teaching literacy skills to people of all ages. She has been teaching in the Fenton Area Public Schools for 30+ years, nearly all of those in special education. She also tutors privately, presents nationally and internationally, and trains people world-wide in English Orthography through Structured Word Inquiry literacy practices through her business, Empower Learning Center. She has served on committees and organizations such as: the Michigan Department of Education Standards Revision Committee and as a Founding Member of Decoding Dyslexia MI, serving as a State Leader for five years. She is a published author of pamphlets, blogs, and articles. Her passion is helping people understand that English spelling is a well-ordered system.
