Few specifics about best ways to provide and best choices for assistive devices.Few specifics about continutity of comunication among home health aids who might be present. ALso instructinfg them e.g., Invariably, one will ask a patient with dementia, "What did you have for lunch today?" One hears a criticism about SLP's - often justified I am afraid - is their focus on swallowing and not practical ways to help pts understand and express themselves

Time to normalize conversations re spiritual and religious beliefs, especially to honor a patient's belief system. Emotional and spiritual states impact health throughout life and especially during end of life. I truly enjoyed spiritual and literary references which elevated the conversation for a broader understanding of the meaning of life. In my opinion, this does not conflict with a scientific model which should include all variables

This course was excellent, because it thoroughly addressed the many aspects related to death and dying. The presenter clarified several differences between pre-active dying and active dying, hospice vs. palliative care, and grief/bereavement. She also stressed the importance of SLP as an important team member, counselor, patient emotional/nutritional support person, and family education assistant.

I was so happy to see this as a topic. I specialize in AAC and work with many people with ALS, therefore the understanding of death and how to support my patients and families during this time has been crucial - but was definitely not a topic discussed in grad school. Helping patients add last messages for the families to their devices, sitting with them as they discuss decisions about placing feeding tubes and/or ending nutrition etc. has been challenging. This course was very helpful!

I just found it so interesting. Hits close to home because my husband died at home, with Hospice Care. He was only 48 years old and died from gastric cancer. I think being a speech pathologist helped me immensely in communicating with doctors, nurses, hospice care workers and being able to advocate for him.
