I know this will sound simple, but I really do appreciate that the instructor gave the review questions for the exam at the end of the course. Sometimes I’ll take the exams after these classes and it feels like the instructor was literally trying to fail us.

I absolutely loved the various models suggested for teaching sounds in various ways to my students! Using the two handed model was genius! I have used my hands in the past, but not on such a large scale, which I think will be much more effective! I also really liked the palate diagrams, as well as the written chart created WITH the student to identify sounds by features!

This course strengthened my confidence in making informed, supportive choices for students with hearing impairments. It encouraged me to reflect deeply on my responsibilities as a clinician and to consider how my decisions directly influence students’ access to communication and learning. I gained a clearer understanding that production shortcuts and intentional approximations can be appropriate and even necessary when working toward functional communication goal.

The information was good. The organization was good. The manner in which the speaker engages the listener through examples and illuminations, facial and vocal variation (smiling, laughing, anecdotal statements...) left me thinking that the speaker, although knowledgeable and organized, wasn't very personable. I wish also that when she said, she uses games in articulation, examples of those games or how games that we may already have can be used, would be very helpful. More examples please.

It discussed the importance of knowing the placement of the sound, the manner- (how do you say the sound?) and whether or not the sound is voiced or voiceless. The use of mouth models, anatomical pictures of the mouth (inside of an open mouth, sagittal view of articulators) and hand-drawn palatograms were all utilized to help assist the students in the formation of various sounds. This information was helpful to me.

Short and sweet, very informative. Techniques/strategies appropriate for students without hearing loss, as well. Hard to explain /k, g/ production - they cannot see what you are doing inside your mouth. Mouth models are not always effective. I will be trying tongue covering whole palate and gradually lowering tongue tip. Organization chart can be modified for younger children by substituting pictures for words (ie., stop sign for stop).

The instructor had a very clear, straightforward, understandable way of presenting information. That was VERY appreciated. I was surprised, though, that she didn't discuss the various prompting methods (PROMPT, cued speech, Visual Phonics) that are typically used with D/HOH individuals for speech sound production therapy. She gave examples as to what hand motions she might use, but didn't discuss the "tried and true" standards.
