I liked how she really explained the difference between accent and dialect. It also made we wonder how many children are over identified with a speech/language disorder, when it is just a deficit or difference.

Children of various cultures are placed on IEPs for lang/arti disorders. This appears to indicate many SLP's lack the knowledge required to assess these students accurately. Course such as these need to become mandatory. Great start to defining the diverse cultures within the US. It appears this course places reason for the various culture difference on poverty, not totally a factor, contributing factor perhaps but not the total picture. And there is no mention of Asian American difference, etc.

I found some of the material presented very problematic based on her examples of "code meshing" and her use of "southern white dialect". Her example of code meshing highlighted clear bias towards mainstream language as she portrayed that the student should "modify" their speech so that the communicative partner would understand what was being asked. in contract, she did highlight areas of AAE that were accurate.

This course points out many of the ways that most language standardized tests consider dialectal differences as disordered characteristics instead of recognizing that they are rule based and merely a variation of GAE.

I learned new information and terms that I did not know about. such as the code meshing, using the term General American English instead of S.A.E., Hispanic Influenced English (HIE). I would like to know how many teachers are trained with this information or seminars that are similar to this. I think if a classroom teacher had this knowledge, it may help them to support many children in becoming academic achievers.
