Enthusiastic presenter, valuable information and good handouts. I appreciated the discussion of code switching vs code meshing; hadn't thought through the negative implications of the underlying concept that a person would need to code switch to "do it the right way."

Many of the students who attend my school are bilingual and it is difficult, as times, to differentiate between language differences and language disorders. This allowed me to think a little bit more about how best to teach young students of various cultures who may be speaking a dialect that is the result of his/her home life. I also liked the explicit descriptions of code switching vs. code meshing, as I believe that I have been using those terms incorrectly. This was very eye opening for me!

Very information-dense, covering a lot of material with fine distinctions that weren't always completely clear to me. This is the only time in over 20 years I haven't passed a quiz at the end of a CE presentation. To be fair, maybe this was because it's not my area of experience. Interesting topic though. Interesting things to think about.

Angie Neal presents research-based information regarding dialect and how it affects literacy in students. She presents pertinent information about what to be aware of and how to proceed with assessing and promoting learning with students with dialects. She emphasizes the differences to consider between General American English and a variety of other dialects which should be considered correct depending on the child's environment.

I love taking courses from this lady. I am totally confused at this point-I totally get the difference versus disorder. How on earth do we teach them that is alright to say "He know who you is" as ok in the school setting. I actually heard a teacher say that to a student. I get the differences-had to explain that to a parent about /f/ for /th/ which is a difference NOT a disorder.
