Engaging and informative course on how speech sound production is closely tied with literacy skills. Challenges with speech sound production and phonological awareness often predict difficulty with learning to read. It is not correct to assume a child just has "articulation" challenges without assessing phonological processing. Screeners for speech sound production should include phonological awareness screening. Treatment should also include PA, ties to orthography, minimal pairs.

There was a lot of useful and interesting information presented. Some of the information was a little muddy when compared to the structure of the exam questions, especially as the presenter gave her opinions, which were different than long-standing definitions in the field. Questions 7 and 10 had multiple correct answers, although the desired answers were specifically related to the topic. Question 1 presumes that any child making a speech sound has phonological and linguistic knowledge.

I know there was much to cover in this course but I felt the instructor went very fast through some of the slides at times so much that I had to often go backwards to re-see slide and hear information. In the school system I work for also we are not permitted to diagnose "dyslexia" which was one of the questions on the exam I got incorrect. I did like the thought of looking at phonological awareness more with my students having speech sound disorders.
