This course was a great reminder about considering other's feelings. Having empathy is much more effective than having pity for someone. Also understanding that colleagues have a difficult time with recommendations because they are not ready/don't want to deal with change, is a powerful statement. I have seen this across the board in my various work settings.

Just giving examples and going through times where meetings and recommendations could be difficult will help myself feel more comfortable approaching them in the future. Every parent wants their child to succeed and disabilities could be heart-breaking for parents. This presentation gave ideas and strategies on how to approach families and come up with ways to help them. I enjoyed hearing about how every individual has strengths and abilities and it's important for families to hear that.

The presenter's perspective as both a clinician and parent of a child with special needs made her a good choice to present the topic. I was encouraged to hear that the profession is moving away from a deficits-focused approach towards a strengths-based model. Her differentiation between empathy and sympathy as well as description of the stages of change were helpful. She provided useful advice for speaking with different audiences including clients, families, and colleagues.

In my opinion, the presenter exposed too much of her personal situation. If you plan to take this course, this participant recommends being in a strong positive mind space. Some parts of the content are a bit disturbing. With that said, the content seemed well-organized, easily understood and useful.Â
