I hear/am a part of conversations like what this course targeted almost every single day that I am working as an SLP within the school system - it is so important to not be robotic when it comes to targeting needs for those with disabilities, having a disability does not mean they can't still accomplish things within their own means!

I appreciate the bullet points and narrative combined with the presenter's personal journey. Remembering to be family-centered seems integral, but our perspectives change as we become parents and sometimes parents of a child with special needs. I thought Ms. Marshall shared this information in the way we would carry it out, with empathy and sensitivity

I felt like the instructor was in my head! I have a similar history to her. I feel like I became a much better therapist once I had my own kids. I now have a child with a genetic deletion who has experienced her own world of therapies and was recently diagnosed with autism at age 8. I have experienced similar situations as the instructor and this really hit the nail on the head for me (including her motivation of diet dr pepper!) Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

The course had a lot of great tips on how to approach families in an empathetic and strengths-based manner, which was great. At the same time it did seem to be placing all the responsibility on the ST-which is something we see a lot with families. They want a goal achieved, but if they will not/cannot follow through at home it’s very difficult to meet their expectations. Also as mandated reporters it was uncomfortable reading something indicating we shouldn’t always report valid concerns.

Effective communication skills that include empathy are needed when speaking to individuals and families who are experiencing challenges. Way too often, information is communicated without the element of human compassion. This course addresses the need for all stakeholders to consider their communication practices for places of improvement.
