I completed this course right after viewing "The Neurodiversity Movement" by Julie Roberts. It was like day and night. Dr. Treadwell-Deering presented the information in a way that reflected the complexity of Autism and that opened the door for a merging of the medical and social models, perhaps through the biospychosocial model. This is the first treatment of neurodiversity that I've seen or read that really caputres the complexity of the issue. THANK YOU for this presentation.

I felt that the history of the disorder was very good. However, because it was not directly speaking to speech/language, OT, or even PT professionals, there was not much information given regarding current (GENZ and post-2020) viewpoints. Our "young" clients of today are very vocal about their experiences with the autism paradigms and treatments their parents had them experience; they also have their own viewpoints on how they socialize and function in the workplace.

Very good speaker, well-covered explanation for a hard to understand topic- ie. differences of vocabulary-disability, disorder, difference, etc. I did not understand one of the test questions that was marked incorrect. 2. Which statement is false? The term “difference” implies the person is simply atypical relative to a population norm. Chosen, Incorrect

Left out crucial information while describing some areas I.e. it’s very important to tell people what Hans aspberger did (brought autistic people to the nazi doctors for experiment) and why autistic people reject that title. And also the point that people wanting to continue to use the term for themselves is ableist bc they see something wrong w autism and that’s why they want to keep using asperger despite the horrific history.

The presenter outlined both perspectives of the medical and neurodiversity models and detailed the nomenclature and history of the nomenclature that aided in understanding the progression of thought, research, and guidelines that have brought our ideals of Autism to where they stand today. I also thought it was most important to include the polling of Autistic individuals, how they view their autism, and what they feel they need to be successful, which is often not the goal of servicers.

I enjoyed hearing a presentation on autism from the perspective of a physician and gaining greater insight of ASD from a medical viewpoint. I do not feel that this course amplified actually autistic perspectives, but rather it amplified the perspective of medical professionals trying to justify practices and terminology that the Autistic community has identified as harmful. I wish I had the word count to write about everything I felt was wrong about this presentation, but here is one thing.Autistic person = IDENTITY first language (like catholic person, bisexual person, Muslim person)Person with autism = person first language
