I appreciated review of terminology important to assessing children with Autism and how to go deeper then just looking at students behavior through asking questions of why the behaviors are present. The speaker presented various questions to ask to help get useful information that can be used to write goals and find helpful solutions for our students. I also appreciated the neurodiverse affirming examples given for goal writing to help correct ableist goals on a student's IEP.

The course, instruction, and terms were well organized and explained. This course will be kept as a reference to aid in using precise language, clarifying definitions, referrals, and service providers. As stated, many professionals w/in the educational team can support social development. Also, misbehavior is not social skills. I will use this statement when I am referred behavioral students for social pragmatic evaluation or expected to treat their "social skills"

I think profound or severe autism should have been addressed more in this including echolalia and self stim. It is fine to address neurodiversity but is confusing when it isn’t clear that the neurodiversity movement is geared towards those with little or no support needs. Our most challenging and needy students are in the profound and severe range - the students who gave little means to communicate.

I REALLY appreciate the breakdown of pragmatics into it's component parts and DEEPLY appreciate that just because a child has ASD does not automatically mean they are on an IEP. Just because an ASD student is doing X or Y or Z does not flag them to 'fit into a mold' but rather figure out the reasons for those behaviors. SLP's can act as the 'translation layer' or bridge between the student and the wider world.
