I enjoyed the refresher and review of AAE. Twenty eight years ago in graduate school, I did my final research paper on AAE. I chose this topic because I grew up in a primarily AA community in New Orleans although I am caucasian. The complexity of AAE fascinates me. I also enjoyed the study that you did regarding theory of mind. I love working with students on the autism spectrum who struggle in this area. I regularly take language samples and use the TNL during evaluations so it was good to know that I'm on tract with fairly assessing students narrative skills. I worked in a primarily wealthy, caucasian district for 12 years and now work in a very linguistically diverse community north of Dallas, TX. My learning continues daily to ensure I am making the best decisions for children to determine whether they have a language difference versus disorder. Thank you for your research and presentation.

I prefer to be able to watch a video vs. just having audio. I felt challenged to follow the presenter based on her high level vocabulary choices--not just content area but the way in which she would communicate everything. She is obviously very intelligent and knows her material, but it was not easy to follow everything, especially without video as a secondary input. It was more "textbook," than conversational. She did have a very pleasant way, and again, I respect her expertise.

The presenter seemed disorganized and was unclear when speaking or answering questions. She constantly lost her train of thought, which made it difficult to follow along. It was very unprofessional when her alarm went off indicating she had a "12PM" meeting and could only answer "this last question." Other presenters on SpeechPathology.com would sometimes go over the 60 minute time limit by a few minutes to make sure the listeners understood what was being said or to get a few more questions answered. I hope this is not the new standard for SpeechPathology.com. Very disappointing.

I learned the importance of Theory of Mind when analyzing a students narrative and how demonstrating Theory of mind in narratives correlates with other necessary components to a good narrative. When analyzing a narrative sample by AAE speakers, it is also important to understand the dialect the student is using and that the dialectal differences from the mainstream dialect is a valuable marker of culture and identity.

I believe this instructor has great knowledge in this area, but she did not share the knowledge. She was specifically asked questions at the end re. the landscape of action and the landscape of consciousness, which I was also confused about and she was unable to clarify the content. The correct answer to question # 2 actually contained a typo? A boy is determined to find IS missing dog, not his. I did not choose this answer because it did not make sense with the typo, yet I got it wrong. I was so excited for this topic to learn more and utilize the info in my practice, but was sadly disappointed. It was a waste of time.
