Assessment and treatment in an acute care hospital and rehab setting can be very time consuming and have limited benefits for the patient. I frequently try to base my goals on functional living for the patient. This is a great guideline with concrete tools that I can directly apply to my practice.

I love that speech pathology.com presents practical courses that help us more treat our patients functionally. For too long, SLPs have been in a rut of evaluations and workbooks doing therapy that is quite outdated and ineffective. All we can say is thank goodness for spontaneous recovery. It is great to see the literature support therapy that will make a practical difference in the lives of our clients! Thanks for presenting the material in a clear and concise manner, also with supporting links.

In over 30 years of practice, there have been so many changes and the biggest challenge is the limited time to make an impact. Most of the patients I work with now are more cognitively impaired, but recently I have seen more patients with aphasia so this CE course comes at a perfect time!

I love the emphasis on functional assessments and interventions to help patients with aphasia meet their goals. It helped refresh my mindset of therapy, drill practice may not be the answer! The patient's social communication goals are much more important and can create greater gains in their confidence and independence. Dr Hinckley is such a great advocate for persons with aphasia and I admire her work!

There are so many ideas and resources in this article that I can definitely use with my patients, to make their outcomes more meaningful. The usefulness of information. Writing goals that are not based on percentages regardless of the outcome benefit to the patient is difficult due to payors. But perhaps the way I determine goals based on functional, meaningful communication outcomes is my problem and not the problem of the payor!
