I am APPALLED at this. It is disgusting and racist. How DARE you claim to know what is in another persons heart and assume that someone is”privileged” based on their skin color. Scolding, guilt tripping and demands to demean oneself to make another feel empowered is what you are doing and is the very definition of racism. You are promoting racial segregation and devision with this narrative

Difficult topic and you navigated it well. Being an SLP who traveled for years, I was often placed in areas where I was the minority, and when reflecting on the 25 questions you posed, I realized how different my answers would have been had I been working in some of my prior places of employment. I also have worked overseas, and nearly all those questions you asked I would have responded "no" to at that time. I think having placed myself in situations where I was the minority, I tend to have a broader and more compassionate understanding for people who are of different nationalities, and/or race. Being married to someone who was also not born or raised in America, but is white, we also have faced some discrimination. I find that the best way to learn is by broadening our horizon. I appreciate you tackling such a big issue.

the quiz on privilege was importantThe discussion about all types of privilege, beyond race was important because of intersectionality. For people to realize there can be many privileges happening at once. This should be required for all educators in my school district. . This course benefits school based therapists as well.

This and similar courses on what affects our ability to deliver services in an ethical and equitable manner are as important on how we diagnose and treat. I think the 25 questions exercise needs to be reexamined because of some inherent biases or assumptions. For example, not all persons identify with a specific religion or practice a religion or attend religious services. Also, the questions about gender privilege are based on gender as binary system and assume that participants identify with the gender they were assigned at birth.

Dr. Clervaud explained ideas that have been bandied about in the news but which have been named without explanation. She gave exercises to help me be able to identify my own privileges. She also gave ideas on how to treat people with more equitability. Dr. Clervaud helped me to be better at consciously acknowledging my privileges in order to set up others for success.

The presenter was clear, concise, and gave excellent examples. I was very upset, however, to see the Horowitz pamphlet and "black skin privilege" referenced in a professional presentation. In our profession we strive to maintain integrity and an evidence basis for claims made during professional development. I'm disappointed that SP.com would embrace such a dated and bogus viewpoint, especially in a presentation on privilege and equity. I'm hard pressed to believe that its inclusion was solely the presenter's decision. Please, please please consider removing this damaging, overtly racist content.
