This presenter made this course easy to follow and highlighted key elements such possible causes and issues of disproportionality in the school system as well as the negative impacts. Additionally, she was able to provide factors to consider and approaches to implement in helping to reduce disproportionality such as having a comprehensive ETR, using dynamic teaching assessments, using a bilingual SLP to evaluate, and implementing an MTSS process.

I liked the information about assessing second language learners, the aspects of teach a concept/sound and see how they retain it and can utilize/implement with your teaching. We definitely need to be truly diagnosing impairment in this population! Also enjoyed the aspects about educational impact, there is a difference between a medical model and an educational model, private services will rarely turn someone down who wants services!

I liked her solutions and ideas about how to share information with parents and administration. I also like how she emphasized a TEAM effort for determining what is best for the child, and the SLP should not always be the bad guy. The guidelines are put in place by the state and federal government, and we are just trying to stay in compliance and do what is best for the child.

Good information to review. Putting cultural differences and English second language differences aside.....I've been doing this for 40 years. I think we are just seeing more and more kids who are not connecting the dots. They can't pass our speech and language assessments with solidly average scores. Little one are coming in without the underlying skills to read, they don't seem to be exposed to more complex language , their memory skills are not as well developed.

I found the emphasis on academics interesting. In my state, we interpret educational impact to include social-emotional and interpersonal skills as well as reading, writing and math. In fact, there is an emphasis on teaching social-emotional skills statewide. We also weigh heavily the impact of speech-language disorders on classroom listening and speaking performance as critical for future job and career readiness.
