In my 31 years in the field, I've never had a student on the spectrum who stuttered. This webinar was quite helpful in that regard. I also liked the technique of putting the lips in a neutral position. I'll definitely use that when the situation occurs.

I’m struggling a little with putting “atypical disfluencies” in a separate bucket than stuttering. I think it could be that we instead need to think of it as a subtype. Much of what she gave as case examples sounded to me as what we would think of as traditional stuttering, except maybe the person had ASD. This area definitely needs more voices/ research as I’m not sure what she’s saying about not directly acknowledging the disfluencies seems consistent with current recommendations

It was applicable to two of my students on my caseload. This provided great information on cluttering and atypical disfluencies (besides stuttering). Previously I thought my 2 students may be cluttering but wasn't completely sure. After this presentation I feel more confident providing a diagnosis.

Sometimes bias will arise in treatment especially in special populations. Looking where pauses occur can clearly make a speaker pause more naturally which leads to better speech productions. Presenter discussed terminology but not scientifically. For example final word disfluency at the end of the word can be a sensory seeking event. It feels good to stretch out the word at the end of an utterance to achieve sensory input. It may not be "atypical" in autism for different reasons not discussed.
