While this was partially a sales pitch for their language program, I appreciate the provision of many of the materials for free by adding your email to their website. The ideas and materials are a great way to teach many of these language skills and provide graphic organizers that are often recommended in IEP goals but are rarely available for us and need to be invented. The graphic organizers and associated picture symbols should be incredibly helpful for students to learn language skills.

The speakers touched on the importance of targeting morphology in order to help students build on their vocabulary because if a student understands roots, prefixes and suffixes, this enables them to figure out many unfamiliar words independently. The lecture also spoke about the importance of visuals in the therapeutic sessions in order to make abstract concepts more concrete for the students. Semantic webbing was also discussed to help the students build on their vocabulary.

I recently switched from working with special needs population to a more typical elementary school and have struggled to fit language therapy into a comprehensive framework. Jeanne and Samantha explained each block succinctly. They did a phenomenal job supporting each block with empirical evidence. The SALI system is right up my learning and intervention alley, as I connect well with rule-based systems (that also leave room for adaptations). SALI seems like a system designed to remove the confusion and sometimes complicated nature in which language intervention occurs. This course gave me renewed hope (and motivation) with language intervention!

I cannot rate this as high as I could for content because I felt like I sat through an advertisement for SALI. I went to the website, which had a QR code up for a long time in the course, after the speakers mentioning free resources, yet there is nothing free about this program and no information on the website other than a link to order. They provided good information for various areas of language development. It was a great review for me and they have some good strategies in working with kids.

Thank you girls so much. I was able to pull helpful strategies from your presentation. One thing that might help your listeners follow better is to spend more time unpacking your steps for therapy. I got a little bit lost and I will have to go back and listen why you do some of the things that you’re doing especially with syntax and morphology. Probably discourse too. But all in all, very helpful.
