This is Part 2 of the four-part series, Pyramid Model in Early Childhood: Improving Social Emotional Competence & Reducing Challenging Behaviors. This course focuses on teaching evidence-based, targeted social-emotional skills (e.g., identifying and expressing emotions, self-regulation, social problem-solving, friendship skills, and co-operative responding) to young children via the Pyramid Model in order to promote their social-emotional development, prevent challenging behavior, and better prepare them academically.

- After this course, participants will be able to describe how social-emotional skills are addressed through direct instruction at the Secondary Level of the Pyramid Model.
- After this course, participants will be able to list the three elements for supporting children’s social-emotional development and preventing/managing challenging behaviors.
- After this course, participants will be able to identify at least five pro-social skills adults can teach young children to prepare them socially, emotionally, and academically.

Dr. Buschbacher is the owner and director of PPATCHWork Children’s Therapy Services in Charlotte, NC. She is a nationally and state-certified speech-language pathologist and holds a doctorate in Special Education, with emphases on early childhood development, ASD, and behavior disorders from the University of Cincinnati. She is an experienced and published positive behavior support (PBS) interventionist, consultant, and trainer. She has taught courses and provided numerous presentations on ASD, behavior intervention, and language development at the university, state, and national levels. Research endeavors include supporting young children with challenging behaviors, including ASD, their families, and educators.
Dr. Buschbacher’s interests and expertise continue to include supporting children of all abilities in inclusive, developmentally appropriate environments in order to enhance their cognitive, communicative, social, and emotional development.
