I feel that this presenter has a very negative view of advocates and I would recommend that she consider adjusting her attitude to consider an advocate and the parent as equal team members and refrain from negative assumptions and expectations. If we are really listening to parents, not just making parents "feel" we are listening to them, the interaction with the parent and advocate may be wouldn't be so negative every time.

The slides were very bare bones with no notes and just had single words like "lawyer" and "salad." It would have been helpful to have more notes explaining what word on the slides to refer back to. It also would have been helpful to have examples of sentence stems to use when in a contentious IEP meeting, ways to prepare like printing out and bringing the district's eligibility criteria, language for stopping an IEP when tensions are high and it's not productive and should be rescheduled.

More factual information should've been included as to what is ethically required. A lot of focus on challenging anecdotal experiences, but doesn't really add to the overall idea of navigating through the actual IEP. When challenges happen in meetings, what is legally allowable? When is it appropriate to table a meeting and reschedule? We all want to get through the meeting without extraordinary measures, but I find most SLPs are misinformed that it should be mutually respectful, not one sided.
