I applaud the support to offer strategies for pws! "Take a deep breath" is ignorance. One participant asked about secondary symptoms and the speaker discouraged any attention to eye contact. During eye contact aversion- as the pws projects and feels shame- the pws dissociates. Dissociation results in a longer moment of stuttering and draws more attention from listeners- which can include mocking and bullying. We cannot "fix listeners."

Some very interesting information on the current research regarding the neuroscience of stuttering, especially as a concept of increased or more sporadic difficulty with spatiotemporal/motor timing. I liked the 'layperson vs. expert' example. The treatment advice was also very interesting though I think that on the topic of breathing it would be good to consider that abdominal breathing can be used for reducing overall muscular tension which is a goal in stuttering modification

she managed to pack a lot of technical information into the course covering the neurological aspects and making the causes more clear, it was a great review along with new info to understand the root causes of stuttering when it's neurologically based. The also reviewed the common treatments and tied it together to better understand why some of the treatments work and why the breathing does not per evidence-based treatment. it was very detailed and covered this area well

This was a very comprehensive presentation of stuttering, considering all components: physiological, clinical, assessment and treatment. I have been practicing for over 35 years, so I am from the "Van Riper" age of stuttering treatment. I appreciated an update in research and clinical applications. I currently treat several children with multiple disability conditions who struggle with fluency issues. The information from this presentation is veryhelpful.

I truly enjoyed the brain anatomy and research tied to the practice and intervention. Additionally, I have a student who submitted a letter to The Stuttering Foundation. I was touched to hear that you read the letters and even take their comments as an informal way to get a vibe on what's going on in practice. I love the value that you place on the kids who took their time to write their stories. I'm absolutely going to share this with my student. Thank you again!
