This course provides an overview of the medical SLP’s vital role in management of patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Discussion includes swallow screenings, clinical and instrumental swallow evaluations and speech-language evaluations for this population, as well as considerations for tracheostomized or post-extubation patients or those on supplemental oxygen. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is also addressed.

Gabriella Barone, MS, CCC-SLP is an ASHA-certified practicing medical speech-language pathologist, specializing in dysphagia management in the acute care/ICU setting. She has experience in a wide range of settings including acute care, subacute, skilled nursing, pediatric homecare, and special education since obtaining her Master’s degree in 2017 from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. She is currently enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology Doctoral program at Kean University, where she investigated the effects of the COVID-19 virus on the role of the medical SLP. Additionally, she is in the process of becoming a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Gabriella has successfully led a speech therapy department in a Brooklyn, NY Skilled Nursing Facility for over 2 years. Presently, she is working at a Level 1 trauma acute care hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She recently gained competency in videofluoroscopic swallow studies. Her primary area of expertise and interest is dysphagia assessment and treatment with a continual focus on improving the quality of life of patients.
