This course expressed her personal bias and what I should value. I do agree with what she said, "I think we can value a child's home culture, but also ask them to respect the school culture as well. This should also encompass respecting the value of language development and expectations on how children succeed in the mainstream and help them succeed without devaluing their culture. There was some good information but her personal bias was overpowering.

The instructor gave detailed information and explained how things that we look at can be developmental but more importantly the cultural aspect and differences within each culture . She was amazing at incorporating ways to assess within the family culture to gain an unbiased look at how they interact within their family verses what we would assume from our own culture.

In EI we do not have access to interpreters much of the time, and when we do, to list developmental norms that are US based is clearly not appropriate. This data helps show how this is not only inaccurate but also culturally biased.

The course identified a variety of challenges related to understanding and appreciating cultural diversity of language development, e.g. insufficient research, different biases, and lack of standardized norms in assessment. Dr. Hobek emphasized the importance of valuing clients' cultural practices rather than expecting clients to "code switch" or "adapt" to white dominant culture. Dr. Hobek also provided relevant strategies to provide culturally responsive assessment and intervention.
