It was shocking to hear how low our health literacy is overall, even in well educated health populations. This was clarifying and eye opening information. I do know people who work in the health field whose language is way beyond my regular understanding, even though I am in a health related field. You cannot assume anybody understands health terms.

There is a great need for this type of information to be addressed; however, there were two style choices that did not make this presentation as strong as it could be. The first is lived experience; I did not get the feeling that the speaker had been treated in non-academic areas, and that people with these difficulties were the exception not the rule for her. The second is the need for further emphasis on all the social determinants of health, not just equity or access.

I think it’s very easy to forget that we need to be speaking at a level that our clients and their caregivers can understand and this course provided some excellent examples of how to make sure we are doing our due diligence to make sure we are explaining assessment and treatment information. I also really liked having the statistics regarding health literacy, I am so happy that I am now aware.
