The sensative information provided was delivered in a non-judgmental and respectful manner. The 2 plans were clear and the case study was excellent. It was relevant! Mr. S is the type of patient we have encountered at the hospital. This course has strongly affected my views and has provided me with the tools to make a difference. Thank you!

This course was excellent in explaining the importance of informed consent and ethical decision-making for dysphagia patients. There are many ethical and moral concerns when deciding whether a patient should be NPO or on thickened liquids, and the best course of action is a shared conversation with the patient, doctor, SLP, and family to ensure the patient has the best quality of life.

I thought this was an excellent course. I work as a school-based SLP, so I typically do not encounter this within my career. However, I do currently have one student with a rare genetic disorder that some of this information applies to. Although I am not the one guiding them clinically, I may soon have to assist with the implementation of feeding changes at school. This is an area that I am not very familiar with, so this is a nice resource.

I love the exaltation of patient centered care. I truly appreciate this open ended process that centers patients' goals and experiences, and does not punish them for changing their minds. I hope this line of thinking is popularized among all SLPs and other members of the medical team. I hope we continue to move away from paternalistic practices and language in reports and in treatment. I appreciate the structured framework and neutral language, and look forward to using the flow chart soon.

I had a few issues which I need to mention. First, wasn't sure if the Mr. S case was a real case or not but was concerned that the presenter indicated that the vocal fold weakness wasn't realized until it was brought up by the patient's wife, who expressed concern regarding the patient's voice being hoarse. That should have been one of the first things that would have been observed during a clinical exam, which would have suggested the need to rule out said pathology!

This course helps clarify and identify other acceptable options and ways to show our support of patients even if they do not follow our valid and evidence-based recommendations. It can sometimes be difficult to continue work with patients who refuse to follow our recommendations, but this course provided some new and sound ways to do so, ethically and professionally.

Good presentation on issues often faced by SLPs in the healthcare setting when the swallowing is so compromised that non-oral feeding is recommended as the safest option for a patient. It always becomes a balancing act on what direction the SLP should take when the patient or family is in disagreement with the SLP's decision. Ultimately as recommended in this course, the patient's decision making capacity has to be considered. Patient/family education and informed consent is essential.

As someone who was practicing in SNF's back in the "early days" of dysphagia TX, I am thrilled to hear about how far we and our MD's and facilities have advanced in acceptance of the clients who want to continue "to eat". I am relieved to hear of the structured procedures for conferencing with the client/family, documenting more uniformly and, in essence, having more clear backing for the treating SLP. Good work on the presentation, your researching and your programs.
