Changing the focus to becoming a more effective communicator versus 100% fluent is a very helpful conversation opener with students and their parents. The presenter effectively broke down how to approach collaborative goal setting in a manner that puts joint responsibility between students/clients and their SLP.

My favorite thing about the course was that she talked about collaboration with the client in developing goals to work on. I have a client right now that I've attempted to get more information from regarding how he feels about his stuttering, but he and his mom have both told me he's doing fine. I feel that the information in this course about collaboration, and one of the handouts that she showed with regard to goal setting, may be helpful for putting together a better treatment plan.

As a SLPA and a stutterer, I want to learn as much as I can to better help students who are dysfluent. This is why I became a speech assistant. And, even though, I'm very knowledgeable in this field, getting them more involved, and getting their thoughts about therapy was something semi-novel to me. Very well done Dr.George Patterson
