I always tend to think of APD to only affect children. The first case study pertaining to the 27 year old adult not losing consciousness after a head injury but displaying symptoms of headaches and fading memory made me realize that APD can affect anyone for many reasons.

Julie was an excellent presenter-very knowledgeable, professional and provided key auditory and visual examples using formal (Buffalo model and Lace), as well as informal approaches. In addition, she provided methods that worked and perhaps, were not as successful (according to needs/wants of patient). True to life in therapeutic process. Thank you!

Efficiently used time and liked that she shared a few slides from her treatment. Course could be improved by talking more about what constitutes "background" noise. All background noise is not equally challenging. Volume is only one concern. Some noise is simple (e.g. similar to white or pink noise or sound of rain. No voices); moderate complexity (variations in signal like sound of traffic; sounds in nature; instrumental music.); complex (noisy restaurant)

The presenter provided clear information in an engaging way. However, it will be difficult to apply some of this information because it was based primarily on an expensive program that I will not be able to purchase or utilize in my setting. I wonder if there are ways to treat APD that are more accessible to school SLPs.

When I was a school SLP in a suburban school district, I had several referrals from students with APD diagnosed by a PRIVATE SLP. However, MN does NOT acknowledge APD as a qualifying disability for SLP services. In order to receive SLP services, the child would need to meet entrance criteria for a Developmental LANGUAGE Disorder. In each case, the child did NOT meet criteria for a LANGUAGE disorder, and did not receive SLP services. Instead, the AUDIOLOGIST provided services. ugh!

The speaker was very knowledgeable and she provided some clear information about where else to look for alternative auditory processing treatment frameworks. However, the speaker only discussed one treatment model that is very expensive and not accessible to most SLPs due to cost. So the take away won’t help me in my daily practice.
