This course is designed to give speech-language pathologists the opportunity to learn about how to initiate basic training with the artificial larynx with their patients. It will review how an artificial larynx works, the various types of artificial larynges and their features, and the selection process for identifying the best device to maximize their patient’s communication. It will describe techniques to facilitate adequate placement and articulation with the device, effective use of on/off timing of the device, appropriate phrasing/pausing, pitch and loudness techniques, and means of eliminating distracting behaviors.

Ms. Benjamin began her career practicing under the mentorship of Carla Gress, PhD and Mark Singer, MD at the University of San Francisco Medical Center. After 8 years at UCSF where she specialized in Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation, Ms. Benjamin relocated to Chicago where she was clinical specialist for H & N cancer at Evanston Northwestern Hospital. Currently, Meaghan is the co-director of education for Atos Medical Inc. and has directed and participated in numerous seminars and training programs in the area of laryngectomy rehabilitation over the last 19 years of her career.
