For the 1st time ever when taking a CEU course, I am angry. While I passed the exam, I found myself choosing answers based upon for what I thought the presenter was looking rather than what was factual. The questions were very poorly constructed. There was more than one response for multiple questions that was accurate or true. Some of the content was thus not accurate. What made this course poor is reflected in the following question from the exam, found in "Additional Comments:"

I appreciated the realistic approach to a topic that many graduate students and practicing SLPs avoid. I can also see applications toward treating adult clients, as well as children/families.

The author shared very useful information regarding appropriate ways to counsel families. As a result, I realized that I should be mindful of how I encourage families through my words when sharing uncomfortable information with them. I show validation by acknowledging their feelings instead of affirming them by saying, "It will all work out." I could replace that phrase by saying, "I can imagine this his challenging to hear."

I was never trained, as an SLP in college, how to counsel the families of my students with communication disorders. This course was very informative and I learned a lot. I highly recommend this course.

I rated this course excellent because counseling is a topic that is never really talked about in our profession. It is a topic (counseling) that is never really taught to undergraduate or graduate students. Counseling is an important concept every therapist should learn when dealing with emotionally sensitive clients. The presenter also emphasized being empathetical towards clients, which in turn helps to build trust amongst client/therapist relationships.
