In 2008, Congress declared June as National Aphasia Awareness Month in an effort to increase public awareness and advocacy for the understanding of a communication disorder that affects approximately one million Americans (https://www.aphasia.org/content/facts-about-aphasia). Although this is a significant step in the right direction, awareness and understanding of aphasia by the general population remains extremely low.
As professionals, we have all had some experience with aphasia through specialty course work, clinical application, or research. With that experience comes the responsibility, to not only serve our patients, but to educate the patient’s family and to increase public awareness. Below are some basic facts on aphasia (some may even be new to you!).
