At a young age, children with communication disorders are at high risk for social punishment from their communicatively typical peers. This course will provide an overview of the emergence of bias in young children, explain the impact of negative attitudes on children with communication disorders, and offer recommendations on how to productively address negative peer attitudes.

Mary Weidner is an Assistant Professor at Marshall University. Her research focuses on measuring and improving children's attitudes toward peers with communication disorders. She developed the Attitude Change and Tolerance program (InterACT), an educational program that teaches children about human differences and how to interact with others who are different.
