The content shared was generally easy to follow and understand on how to support families and their use of AAC. However, strategies used to elicit language (i.e. sabotage, and only responding to use of AAC to communicate) are outdated and pretty awful. All this does is teach compliance rather than natural language for children. There will be no joy, engagement or carry over with these methods. Disappointed that this is still being taught to families, clinicians, and her college students.

A lot of the strategies mentioned are not as beneficial for children with ASD. Strategies such as sabotage make it so that the child feels that communication/the device is work which in turn makes the device a job rather than their main form of communication. I have found that modeling what you want them to say or ways that they can instead communicate rather than "waiting them out" teaches the child a lot more than witholding things that are important to them.

The breaking down of elicitation vs teaching vs cueing strategies was helpful. However, I deducted points due to the lack of neurodiversity affirming strategies, the promotion of HOH prompting, and the promotion of 'shaping behaviors'. These strategies are harmful to autistic learners and increase the likeliness of prompt dependency. As this is listed as an introductory course, I am worried that new SLPs may normalize this type of behavior.
