This course did a good job with emphasizing the many pieces of information that must be used to make an eligibility decision, and that to be eligible a student must be impacted academically, socially-emotionally, or vocationally.

It answered specific questions and concerns that myself and other colleagues have. These concerns frequently come up in conversations every year within my district and other districts where friends work. Even if we know this information, our bosses may not. So, to have this to reference with them would be helpful.

As a practicing SLP in the schools for nearly 30 years, this information was not new to me. That being said, it was a good review of IDEA and the impact on caseload size. One thing that I have been found to be true over the years is that the lower my caseload, the quicker I'm able to dismiss students from my caseload. I can provide better services if I'm not servicing 50 students at a time.

This is always a good topic for SLPs to reflect on. This article did a nice job outlining the importance of each area discussed. I enjoyed the detailed explanations for "why" for each area/question. Often, we do things because we were taught that way and we don't realize the regulations or laws behind it.

Yikes. I normally like this presenter, but I’m concerned with her assertion that the need for specially designed instruction is subsumed by prong 2/educational impact. That is dangerously wrong. I had a student with Tourette’s; admin wanted pragmatic language therapy, because it impacted education- true, but SDI did not apply because there are no EBP treatments for the symptoms of Tourette’s. A fully functional independent AAC user still has educational impact, but no need for SDI.

This was really helpful because I work at a school that tends to admit too many people to speech, even though they don't need it, just because they meet the score based on a test. I don't have teachers do thorough interventions enough so this was helpful to hear too.

She used the law and confirmed my understanding in what I already knew by using the actual IDEA laws by number! Thank you for the documentation. I no longer work in an environment that uses IEPs, but it will help me sleep at night from the times that I did work with IEPs and tried to tell others in that environment what the law was and they didn't believe me. Thank you. You couldn't be more clear in your discussion.
