It was very clear that she cares about her students and their interests. I liked the reminder that while teenagers are starting to look and sound adult-like, they still have a lot of development going on and it's important to respect that process and use it for their advantage.

Relatable info. As an SLP working w/middle school students, I find making those connections w/each student results in increased communication & self confidence in my students. I also chaperone an end of year 8th grade trip to DC & NYC. Amazing to witness the transformation students demonstrate from beginning of trip to the end as they gain increased independence. Great transition from middle to high school independence skills. I loved the pruning leaves & branches metaphor, amazing to witness it

I believe many specialists, not only SLPs, but others that work with adolescents need to know what is going on in the brain and what is occurring chemically. This could make an impact in how we interact with our children.

Been working with older kids for a million years. This really did add to my knowledge base. Admin and teachers are the real folks who need this information. SLPs are usually only one person in a building who can rarely make change especially at the hs level. Worked in my most challenging school recently and really noticed a difference in kids and expectations

I wish that I had known the research that supports what I did with middle schoolers when I was working with them 20 years ago. It amazes me that intuitively, I was really on target. But I am a very emotionally-based person, so maybe that was why I was in tune with this age group.

Information and research regarding maturation of the teenage brain should be shared with all middle school teachers and parents. It helps dispel the myth that teenage behavior is all hormonal and intentional and places some of the 'blame' on neurological development. I enjoyed the case models and examples as this allowed me to compare with students that I have had in the past.
