There were many great takeaways in this course, but as an SLP, I do not completely agree with providing "Behavioral consultation and support with sensory processing challenges". This is the job of a behavior support specialist and/or occupational therapist and/or school psychologist. They are better equipped to manage behaviors and address sensory needs than an SLP.

It gave ideas for how to integrate into the classroom or collaborate with the classroom teacher. Examples related more to OT than SLPs however it did give reminders to push in and talk to teachers to fully understand how to best support a student's true needs within the general education setting. It also gave the advise to start with at least just one teacher to get started with learning the skill.

She also explained that there are many varying factors that prevent/hinder collaborations as well: lack of enough time during the school work day, workload, territorial issues and lack of rapport being established between team members.

Lots of examples of things to consider when collaborating. I'd take out the Harry Potter quote...not so great for Trans or non gender conforming clinicians or students. Also, the "good sitting" does kind of imply that students who need to move when they are learning are "bad" students.

SLP department has spoken about collaboration for several years. Unfortunately, the climate in our school prevents collaboration between related services and teachers. We are viewed as an annoyance and an interference to their curriculum. At the high school level, recruiting special education teachers willing to work in private nonpublic schools serving students with learning differences has been difficult, so the state has authorized hiring general education teachers in content areas. Trying.
