It's sometimes difficult to determine our roles as SLPs in mental health within the school setting. This course did a good job, in my opinion, of bridging that gap.

One of the most valuable aspects of this course was its focus on the role of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in supporting students with social-emotional and behavioral needs. The course clearly demonstrated that SLPs are not limited to addressing speech and language deficits, but also play an important role in fostering social communication skills and emotional awareness. The strategies presented—such as explicit instruction in social communication, role-playing real-life scenarios.

Gave good information on treatment strategies that may be used by related professionals (e.g. psychologists) in treating teens with mental health challenges. Since the co-morbidity of NDD and other mental health challenges is fairly high, we are also going to have these kids on our caseload so good to consider our role and ability to collaborate to best support these kids.

I think that mental health is something that still is very under-discussed within a general education setting. Often I think having resources and the individuals available to meet with these students is hard to come by. Continuing education in regards to how to help or make appropriate referrals for these students is very beneficial.
